The Orthodox Presbyterian Church

Our name reflects our commitment to the Bible. It was embraced by a group of visionaries fifty years ago. They had a passion to see a dream fulfilled: to give rise to a contemporary church which would not only embrace the teachings of the Bible, but demonstrate their relevant application. They envisioned a church that would be aggressive in meeting practical needs through a loving and caring people who live in the mainstream of society.

They were bold in adding "orthodox" to the traditional Presbyterian name. To be orthodox one not only seeks to be true to the teachings of the Bible, but to prove their relevance in answering the needs of society. Orthodox Presbyterians have uniquely answered the challenge of proving the Bible's ability to address and resolve the hard questions.

Characterized by People Who Care

We not only affirm the historic beliefs of the Christian faith; we are also concerned about demonstrating and applying those beliefs. Faith proves itself when a people of faith sacrifice to serve their society. They demonstrate the relevance and vitality of the good news of the gospel-a practical message that gives men and women assurance in the midst of uncertainty ... peace in a world of turmoil.

Neither computers nor nuclear energy have outmoded the Bible. We are persuaded that it is without error, and it is God's dynamic and living message for us today. The Bible alone tells us what we need to know in order to live a purposeful life and die at peace with God. It points us to the exciting world beyond the grave. It speaks truth that addresses the basic questions of meaning and purpose in life, and it does so in a transforming way!

Because we take the Bible seriously, its important teachings are summarized in our statement of belief, designed to be a guide for living and faith. That statement is the Westminster Confession of Faith. This Confession has been the guide for faithful Presbyterian churches for over three hundred years. We are applying it in a practical way to the challenges of the day in which we live.

What Makes Us Distinctive?

Our church was born out of concern for what Christianity really is. In the 1920s and 1930s a number of Presbyterians insisted that their church (then the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.) and its ministers should teach and preach only the biblical faith summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith. Others, however, insisted that ideas be allowed to be taught in the church that were quite contrary to the teachings of the Bible. When many who sought to be faithful to historic Christianity were forced to leave the Presbyterian Church in loyalty to the Word of God, they formed the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

This difference of belief still exists today, but we can stand on no other ground. Our faith stands or falls on what we believe about the Bible.

We Want You To Share The Joy Of Our Faith

The joy we want to share comes through our relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus demonstrated God's love for us by giving his life. Through his death on the cross we can experience God's forgiveness and life-changing renewal by his Spirit. Receiving Jesus Christ in repentance from sin and putting our trust in him, we enjoy a new relationship with God. Being at peace with him, we find a life of purpose and hope. To know and follow him is to experience a life of abundant joy. ("I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).
